What is the best way to store an aikuchi for long-term display?
Updated Mar 2026
Aikuchi blades — particularly those made from high-carbon or Damascus steel — require periodic attention to remain in display-ready condition. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove oil blended with mineral oil) along the blade surface every two to three months using a soft lint-free cloth or traditional nuguigami paper. This prevents surface oxidation and keeps the steel's finish clear. For storage, a horizontal blade stand or a padded shadow box keeps the piece stable without pressure points on the lacquered saya. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade lacquer and handle wrap over time. In humid or coastal environments, place a small silica gel desiccant pack inside any enclosed case to manage moisture, and check it seasonally.
