What steel types are used in collectible aikuchi, and how do they differ?
Updated Feb 2026
The most common steel choices in modern collectible aikuchi are Damascus steel, T10 carbon steel, 1045 carbon steel, and manganese steel. Damascus steel is produced by layering and folding multiple steel types, resulting in a visible grain pattern on the blade surface that is unique to each piece — no two Damascus blades look identical. T10 is a high-carbon tool steel prized for its ability to hold a clay-tempered hamon, the wavy temper line that forms during differential hardening and is one of the most historically authentic details a collectible blade can carry. 1045 carbon steel is a more accessible option that still takes a good polish and finish. Manganese steel offers notable hardness and wear resistance. For display purposes, T10 and Damascus are generally considered the most visually compelling choices.
