How should I maintain the blade to prevent rust over time?
Updated Feb 2026
High-carbon steel blades like those in this collection will develop surface oxidation without consistent maintenance. After initial unpacking, wipe the blade with a soft cloth to remove any residual factory oil, then apply a fresh coat of choji oil or pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil in a thin, even layer. Store horizontally or edge-up on a dedicated katana stand, never leaning blade-down, which can stress the curvature over time. Avoid leather-lined cases for long-term storage — leather traps humidity and introduces tannins that stain polished steel. Re-oil every two to three months, or more frequently if you live in a coastal or high-humidity environment. If light surface rust appears, remove it gently with uchiko powder on a soft cloth before re-oiling; do not use abrasive compounds, which will scratch the finish.
