Which steel is best for a Japanese katana intended for display?

 Updated Feb 2026

For display purposes, the best steel depends on what visual qualities matter most to you. T10 tool steel and 1095 high-carbon steel produce the most vivid and well-defined hamon temper lines through differential clay tempering, making them ideal if the hamon is your primary aesthetic interest. Damascus and folded steel katana offer layered surface patterning that adds visual depth and uniqueness to each blade. For collectors who prefer lower maintenance, 1045 and 1060 carbon steel katana offer clean, polished blades at a lower price point. Stainless steel options require the least care but are limited to decorative display only. All steels in our collection produce attractive, display-worthy blades.
