How do I maintain a blue blade wakizashi to preserve the color treatment?
Updated Feb 2026
Maintaining a blue blade wakizashi requires protecting both the underlying carbon steel from oxidation and the blue color surface treatment from abrasion or chemical damage. For the blade steel, the standard care routine applies: after every handling session, wipe the full blade gently with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture, then apply a very thin coat of camellia oil or quality mineral oil and buff away excess. For the blue blade surface specifically, use only soft cloths for contact - avoid any abrasive materials, metal polishing compounds, or cleaning agents that could scratch or chemically alter the colored surface. Do not use blade polishing products that are designed to remove surface material, as these will damage or eliminate the blue color treatment. Store the wakizashi away from extended direct sunlight, which will gradually fade the blue treatment over time. When removing or inserting the blade into the scabbard, handle smoothly without forcing - scratching the blade against the scabbard mouth can damage the color surface at the contact point. With consistent gentle maintenance, the blue blade treatment will remain vivid and intact for extended display use.
