What should I know about displaying a wakizashi safely at home?
Updated Mar 2026
Wakizashi display best on horizontal sword stands or mounted horizontally on a wall rack with the edge facing upward — the traditional Japanese orientation that also minimizes stress on the habaki and saya over time. Keep the display area away from direct sunlight, which can fade lacquer finishes and dry out wooden components. Humidity is the primary enemy of both the blade and the saya: aim for a stable environment between 40–50% relative humidity. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every few months to prevent surface oxidation, even on pieces kept primarily for display. Avoid touching the blade surface directly, as skin oils accelerate rust formation on high-carbon steel.
