What steel grades are used in blue wakizashi swords?
Updated Feb 2026
Blue wakizashi in this collection are built from three distinct steel grades that offer different combinations of quality and visual character. T10 carbon steel is the premium option: its fine grain structure and controlled carbon content allow for clay-tempered differential heat treatment that can produce a visible hamon on the drawn blade. A T10 blue wakizashi with a blue scabbard offers both premium blade craft and bold color aesthetic simultaneously - the hamon appears on the polished blade when drawn, unaffected by the blue scabbard's color treatment. Manganese Steel is used in the blue blade wakizashi pieces, where its exceptional surface hardness and consistent finish quality allow the blue color treatment to be applied with maximum clarity and vibrancy. Damascus steel blue wakizashi combine fold-forged layered blade patterning with blue scabbard or fitting elements. All grades use full-tang construction with the blade steel running from kissaki tip through the complete handle, secured by a mekugi pin.
