How do I maintain a gold blade or gold scabbard treatment on a katana?
Updated Feb 2026
Maintaining a gold blade treatment requires the same fundamental approach as any colored blade finish: protect the carbon steel from oxidation with regular oiling, and protect the colored surface from abrasion by using only soft cloths for contact. After every handling session, wipe the blade gently with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture, then apply a very thin coat of camellia oil or mineral oil and buff away excess. For the gold surface specifically, avoid abrasive materials and metal polishing compounds that are designed to remove surface layers - these will damage or eliminate the gold treatment. For a gold lacquered scabbard, wipe with a soft dry cloth and avoid water, cleaners, and prolonged direct sunlight that will gradually fade the gold lacquer color. Gold finishes respond well to directed warm lighting in display, which deepens the color's warmth and luminosity. Store the sword on a display rack or in its scabbard in a stable-temperature, low-humidity room to protect both blade and scabbard from moisture and temperature extremes.
