What should I know about storing a carbon steel tanto at home?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon steel requires more active care than stainless alternatives, but the routine is simple. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade every two to three months, or more frequently in humid climates. When sheathing the blade for extended periods, ensure the interior of the saya is completely dry, as trapped moisture accelerates surface oxidation. Avoid storing the tanto in leather sheaths or cloth wrapping for long durations, since both materials can retain moisture against the steel. A horizontal display stand in a temperature-stable, low-humidity room is ideal. With consistent care, the blade surface and fittings will remain in exhibition-quality condition indefinitely.
