How should I store and maintain a white saya tanto at home?
Updated Mar 2026
White lacquered sayas require a bit more care than black or natural wood scabbards because surface discoloration from humidity or fingerprints is more visible. Store the tanto horizontally on a dedicated sword stand in a room with stable humidity — ideally between 40% and 60% relative humidity. Avoid placing the saya near direct sunlight, which can yellow or fade hand-painted lacquerwork over time. For the blade itself, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil every two to three months using a soft cloth, wiping away any previous residue first. Handle the blade with clean cotton gloves to prevent skin oils from reaching the high-carbon steel, which can cause surface oxidation if left unaddressed. The saya's exterior should only be wiped with a dry, lint-free cloth.
