How should I store and maintain a collectible naginata?
Updated Mar 2026
Store the naginata horizontally on padded display mounts or in its saya, away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, which can cause lacquer to crack and promote surface oxidation on bare steel. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade every two to three months - or more often in humid climates - using a soft lint-free cloth. Avoid touching the blade surface directly; skin oils accelerate micro-oxidation on high-carbon steels. The lacquered saya should be wiped with a dry cloth only; no solvents. Wooden components including the shaft benefit from occasional treatment with camellia oil to prevent drying and checking. If displayed in a case, silica gel packets help regulate ambient moisture.
