Can a Nodachi be part of a traditional Japanese sword set?
Updated Feb 2026
Traditionally, Japanese sword sets like the daisho paired a katana with a wakizashi as symbols of samurai status. The Nodachi was not part of the classical daisho, but modern collectors often build expanded display arrangements that include a Nodachi alongside a katana and wakizashi for a graduated three-sword presentation. Matching design elements — similar tsuba motifs, coordinated saya lacquer colors, and consistent ito wrapping styles — create visual cohesion across the set. Some collectors also pair a Nodachi with a tanto for a contrasting long-and-short arrangement that emphasizes the dramatic scale difference between the two forms.
