How should I display and maintain a full tang Nodachi?
Updated Feb 2026
Because of its exceptional length, a Nodachi requires a horizontal sword stand or wall-mounted rack with at least two support points spaced far enough apart to prevent bowing. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade lacquered saya finishes and dry out tsuka ito wrapping. For blade maintenance, apply a thin coat of choji oil or refined mineral oil every four to six weeks using a soft cotton cloth, wiping from spine toward edge in one direction. In humid climates, increase oiling frequency to prevent surface oxidation, especially on high-carbon steels like 1060 and T10. The saya interior should remain clean and dry — never store the blade inside the scabbard for extended periods in high-humidity environments, as trapped moisture accelerates corrosion.
