What steel types are used in Hattori Hanzo katana replicas?

 Updated Feb 2026

The replicas in this collection use two primary steel types depending on the variant. The Red Blade Katana is constructed from folded Damascus steel, produced by layering multiple steel billets, forge-welding them together, and drawing them out repeatedly to create the characteristic wavy grain pattern visible on the blade surface. The Bride Katana uses 1045 carbon steel, a medium-to-high carbon alloy that responds well to clay tempering, resulting in a visible hamon line along the blade. O-Ren Ishii's Shirasaya variant is forged from 1065 carbon steel, which sits at a higher carbon content and holds a finer edge geometry. Each steel choice reflects a different aspect of traditional Japanese blade-making and offers a distinct visual and tactile character for the collector.
