Frequently Asked Questions

What steel types are used in traditional naginata replicas?
This collection features three primary steels. T10 high-carbon steel is clay tempered to create a real hamon — the visible temper line formed when the spine is coated with clay before quenching, leaving the edge harder than the back. Damascus pattern steel is produced by folding and forge-welding multiple layers, resulting in distinctive wavy grain lines that are unique to each blade. Manganese steel provides a more corrosion-resistant option that holds a clean polish with minimal upkeep. All three are full-tang, meaning the steel extends uninterrupted through the handle, which is critical for the structural balance of a polearm-length collectible.
How does a naginata differ from a katana in design?
The most obvious distinction is the mounting. A naginata features a curved blade fitted to an extended pole-length handle, giving it a total length often exceeding 110 cm, whereas a katana pairs its blade with a much shorter two-handed grip. The naginata blade itself tends to be wider near the tip and tapers toward the tang, optimizing its sweeping arc geometry. Historically, this design served a different tactical role, but for collectors the key differences are aesthetic: the longer tsuka wrapping, the unique balance point, and the dramatic wall presence that a polearm offers compared to a standard sword display.
How should I display and store a naginata to prevent damage?
A horizontal wall-mounted rack with padded cradles is the most popular option, keeping the piece visible while distributing weight evenly along the handle and blade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade lacquer finishes and dry out the tsuka wrapping over time. For humidity control, keep the room between 40–60% relative humidity; silica gel packets inside the saya help in more humid climates. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or refined mineral oil to the blade every four to six weeks, wiping with a soft flannel cloth to prevent fingerprint etching and surface oxidation.
What does a real hamon line indicate on a naginata blade?
A real hamon is the visible boundary between the harder edge steel and the softer spine created during differential clay tempering. The smith coats the spine and flats with an insulating clay mixture, leaving the edge exposed, then heats and quenches the blade. The exposed edge cools rapidly into martensite — a harder crystalline structure — while the insulated spine remains in the tougher pearlite phase. The transition between these two zones produces the hamon. Unlike etched or printed lines found on mass-produced replicas, a genuine hamon shifts subtly under changing light and is a reliable marker of traditional forging craftsmanship.
Are these naginata replicas suitable as gifts for history enthusiasts?
Absolutely. A hand-forged naginata makes a striking gift for anyone passionate about Japanese history, martial arts heritage, or edged-art collecting. The variety of saya lacquer colors — blue, red, black, and green — lets you match the recipient’s taste or interior decor. Each piece arrives with a fitted saya for safe storage and a polished blade ready for immediate display. Because the collection spans multiple steel types and decorative styles, you can choose anything from a bold Damascus-patterned showpiece to a restrained manganese steel model, making it easy to find something that suits both new collectors and seasoned enthusiasts.

Overall good weapon nice cutting and feel but something wrong with the glue job inside the saya as it would keep getting on the blade no matter how many times said saya cleaned it and washed it out with soap and water until I cut it in half and removed it and did my own glue job which seemed to fix that but yea cause of that I can’t give it a 5 star I’m sure you’d understand

1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm 1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm

The swords arrived 7-8 days after they were shipped. I had received an email confirming the order when I placed it, however I did not receive an email when it shipped, so I didn't know to look for them. They may have been outside a day before I noticed the boxes. With that said the boxes arrived in good shape with no obvious shipping damage. I'm not the biggest fan of the all styrofoam containers, due to it being a little messy when opening the packaging, but I can't deny it did an excellent job in protecting the swords as they arrived in perfect condition. I haven't had a chance to cut any water bottles yet, but all of the swords seem reasonably sharp. Everything seems well built with no obvious defects that I can tell at this time.

My first Naganata. I'm hooked. The most solid and we'll balanced sword I have purchased yet. The wooden Saya is a thing of beauty. The entire sword is gorgeous from top to bottom. It came perfect out of the box. Sharp, no rattles, fits perfectly in the saya. It will be my main blade to practise with going forward. Great job!
