Frequently Asked Questions

What steel types are used in handmade naginata blades?
Our handmade naginata are forged in three primary steel types. T10 high-carbon steel is a tungsten-alloy tool steel prized for its edge retention and suitability for clay tempering, which produces a visible hamon line along the blade. Manganese steel offers solid durability and a slightly more forgiving flex profile, making it a practical choice for collectors who value resilience. Damascus pattern steel consists of multiple layers — often several hundred — that are repeatedly folded and forge-welded, creating the distinctive wavy grain pattern on the blade surface. Each steel type delivers a different visual character and metallurgical personality, so the best choice depends on whether you prioritize hamon aesthetics, layered patterning, or overall toughness in your display piece.
How does clay tempering create a real hamon on a naginata?
Clay tempering, known in Japanese as tsuchioki, involves coating the blade spine and flat with an insulating clay mixture while leaving the edge area exposed or thinly coated. When the heated blade is quenched in water, the exposed edge cools rapidly and forms hard martensite, while the clay-insulated spine cools slowly and retains a softer, more flexible pearlite structure. The boundary between these two crystalline zones appears as a natural hamon — a wavy or cloudy line visible on the polished steel. Unlike etched or cosmetic hamon, this genuine differential hardline is a structural feature baked into the steel itself, making it a hallmark of authentic Japanese forging tradition that collectors specifically seek out.
What is the best way to display and store a naginata?
Because of their length — most models measure around 118 cm — naginata look best mounted horizontally on a wall rack or displayed vertically in a dedicated polearm stand. Store the blade inside its lacquered saya when not on display to protect the finish and keep dust off the steel. Apply a thin layer of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade every four to six weeks, wiping away any old oil and fingerprints with a soft microfiber cloth before re-oiling. Keep the piece in a room with stable humidity, ideally between 40 and 55 percent, to prevent moisture-related discoloration on the steel and warping of the wooden saya or handle wrap.
How is a handmade naginata different from a katana?
The most obvious difference is blade geometry and mounting. A naginata features a curved blade mounted on an extended handle, giving it a sweeping, polearm silhouette that historically distinguished it from the single-hand grip of a katana. The blade profile tends to be wider near the tip with a pronounced curvature designed for broad arcing motions, whereas a katana blade tapers more gradually. Construction-wise, both can share identical steel types and tempering methods — T10 clay tempered, Damascus folded steel — but the naginata's longer overall length and different balance point create a distinct display presence. Collectors often pair a naginata alongside a katana and tanto to represent the full range of traditional Japanese edged craft.
Are these naginata full-tang construction?
Yes, every naginata in this collection uses full-tang construction, meaning the steel extends from the blade tip through the entire length of the handle. The tang is secured with mekugi pins and wrapped tightly with traditional cord or synthetic ito to ensure a solid, rattle-free fit. Full-tang design is considered the gold standard for structural integrity in Japanese blades because it distributes stress evenly across the whole assembly rather than concentrating it at a joint. For collectors, full-tang also signals that the piece was built to the same structural standards as historically functional examples, which adds both authenticity and long-term durability to the display piece.

Overall good weapon nice cutting and feel but something wrong with the glue job inside the saya as it would keep getting on the blade no matter how many times said saya cleaned it and washed it out with soap and water until I cut it in half and removed it and did my own glue job which seemed to fix that but yea cause of that I can’t give it a 5 star I’m sure you’d understand

1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm 1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm

The swords arrived 7-8 days after they were shipped. I had received an email confirming the order when I placed it, however I did not receive an email when it shipped, so I didn't know to look for them. They may have been outside a day before I noticed the boxes. With that said the boxes arrived in good shape with no obvious shipping damage. I'm not the biggest fan of the all styrofoam containers, due to it being a little messy when opening the packaging, but I can't deny it did an excellent job in protecting the swords as they arrived in perfect condition. I haven't had a chance to cut any water bottles yet, but all of the swords seem reasonably sharp. Everything seems well built with no obvious defects that I can tell at this time.

My first Naganata. I'm hooked. The most solid and we'll balanced sword I have purchased yet. The wooden Saya is a thing of beauty. The entire sword is gorgeous from top to bottom. It came perfect out of the box. Sharp, no rattles, fits perfectly in the saya. It will be my main blade to practise with going forward. Great job!
