What makes a tanto "straight" vs. a standard tanto?
Updated Feb 2026
A standard tanto has a gentle upward curve along the cutting edge — the result of differential heat treatment during the hardening process. A straight tanto, sometimes called chokuto-style, maintains a flat, non-curved profile from tip to handle. This geometry predates the curved blade tradition in Japan and requires the smith to control the heat-treat process very precisely to prevent unintended warping. For the collector, the straight profile creates a clean, architectural silhouette that displays beautifully in horizontal wall mounts or flat presentation stands, and it makes the quality of the grind and polish immediately visible without the softening effect that curvature can provide.
