What makes a chokuto different from a standard katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

The chokuto is a straight, double-edged blade — one of Japan's oldest sword forms, predating the curved katana by several centuries. While a katana features a distinctive curved profile and a single sharpened edge, the chokuto runs perfectly straight from tip to tang, with symmetrical edges on both sides. This geometry gives it a distinctly different silhouette and balance point. For collectors, this distinction matters because the chokuto represents an earlier chapter in Japanese sword history, and Sasuke Uchiha's adoption of this form in Naruto was a deliberate nod to that ancient, unadorned aesthetic. Reproductions faithfully preserve the flat grind and symmetrical cross-section that define the form.
