How should I store and maintain a hardwood saya katana long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
Store the katana horizontally on a padded rack or vertically in a display stand with the edge facing upward — the traditional orientation that prevents the blade's weight from pressing against the saya interior. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, which can fade lacquer finishes and dry out the wood over time. Humidity is the primary enemy: aim for 45–55% relative humidity in the storage room. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every three to six months using a soft lint-free cloth, wiping from the habaki toward the tip in one direction. For the saya itself, a very light application of furniture wax to lacquered finishes maintains sheen without building up residue. Never store the blade inside the saya for extended periods without occasional removal and airing.
