How do I care for a carbon steel blade on display?
Updated Feb 2026
Carbon steel — whether 1045, 1060, or Damascus — will develop surface oxidation over time if left unprotected, so a simple maintenance habit preserves both appearance and collectible condition. Every two to three months, apply a very light coat of camellia oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade using a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping with the grain from spine to edge rather than across it. Remove the blade from the saya for storage if humidity in your area is high, as trapped moisture accelerates surface spotting. Keep the display away from direct sunlight and heating vents, which can dry out wooden components and affect lacquer over time. These steps take under five minutes and protect your investment for decades.
