What maintenance routine do carbon steel samurai swords require?
Updated Feb 2026
Carbon steel samurai swords require the standard high-carbon blade maintenance routine centered on consistent oil application. After every handling session, wipe the complete blade with a clean, soft lint-free cloth to remove all fingerprints and moisture. Fingerprints left on carbon steel initiate surface oxidation within hours in humid conditions. Apply a thin, even coat of camellia oil or high-quality mineral oil to the full blade surface from tip to habaki fitting, working across both flat surfaces and the edge bevel. Buff away excess oil with a fresh section of cloth, leaving the thinnest protective film. For pieces with decorative tsuba or fittings in iron or mixed metals, apply a small amount of oil to the metal fittings as well. Store the sword in its scabbard between display sessions. Repeat the oil application after every handling, and perform a fresh oil coat before any extended storage period.
