Edge quality on a Japanese katana is directly tied to the steel grade and heat treatment, with T10 carbon steel producing the finest cutting edge characteristics of any grade in the Japanese sword collecting category. T10's fine grain structure - achieved through the clay-tempering process that creates differential hardening - produces a hard martensite edge zone capable of being ground to a very fine geometry that holds its form. Damascus steel produces excellent edge quality in the hard edge zone of a properly clay-tempered Damascus piece. 1095 high-carbon steel provides the mid-tier edge quality appropriate to its grade. 1045 steel produces edge geometry appropriate to its hardness tier.
