What is the correct oil maintenance routine for a 1045 steel katana?
Updated Feb 2026
1045 steel katana require consistent oil maintenance to prevent surface oxidation. The routine is straightforward and the same across all carbon steel grades. After every handling session, wipe the complete blade surface with a clean, soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and any moisture. Fingerprints left on carbon steel will cause visible spot oxidation within days in humid environments. Apply a thin, even coat of camellia oil - the traditional Japanese blade maintenance oil - or high-quality mineral oil to the full blade surface from tip to habaki fitting. Then buff away the excess with a fresh section of cloth, leaving only the thinnest protective film. Perform this maintenance after every handling without exception. For long-term storage between display periods, perform a fresh oil application before putting the sword away. The simplicity of this routine makes it easy to maintain consistently.
