How should gold blade treatments be maintained to preserve the color quality?
Updated Feb 2026
Gold blade treatments require the same fundamental care as any carbon steel blade, with specific attention to protecting the surface treatment layer. After every handling session, wipe the full blade with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints - the acids in fingerprints react with the surface treatment over time and can cause discoloration. Apply a thin coat of camellia oil or mineral oil to the complete blade surface and buff away excess. The oil creates a barrier against atmospheric moisture and fingerprint contact. Avoid abrasive contact of any kind with the blade surface - even light abrasion can damage the gold treatment layer. Store the blade in the scabbard or on protected brackets where the blade surface is not at risk of contact. With consistent oil protection and careful handling, a gold blade treatment will maintain its color quality over an extended display lifetime.
