How should I care for the natural wood fittings on these pieces?
Updated Mar 2026
Natural wood saya and handles are sensitive to humidity fluctuations. Keep your aikuchi in an environment with stable relative humidity — ideally between 40 and 60 percent — to prevent the wood from warping, cracking, or developing gaps at the fittings. Avoid placing the sword near heating vents, windows with direct sun exposure, or exterior walls that experience seasonal temperature swings. The wood itself generally does not require treatment, but if the surface feels dry over time, a very light application of Renaissance Wax or a wood-appropriate oil applied sparingly to the exterior of the saya can help maintain the surface. Store the piece horizontally on a proper sword stand; prolonged vertical storage can place uneven stress on the wood and affect the fit between saya and handle over time.
