What Damascus and pattern steel types are used in tanto construction?
Updated Feb 2026
Damascus steel tanto in this collection use fold-forged Damascus steel and Melaleuca 1000-layer pattern steel. Forge-welded Damascus combines multiple steel types through heating, folding, and forge-welding, with the different steel types creating visual contrast when acid-etched and polished. The pattern in Damascus tanto can be straight-layered, random, or twisted depending on how the billet was manipulated during forging - each blade carries a unique pattern. Melaleuca 1000-layer steel achieves its pattern through very high fold count - approximately 10 doublings producing 1000 distinct layers - creating a finer and more regular pattern density than standard Damascus. Both construction types run the layered pattern through the complete blade cross-section, not just on the surface.
