What is the care routine for a real metal carbon steel katana?
Updated Feb 2026
Genuine carbon steel requires consistent oil maintenance to prevent oxidation. After every handling session, wipe the blade with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture, then apply a thin coat of camellia or mineral oil across the complete blade surface and buff away excess. Perform this consistently after every handling - even brief examination. Store in stable-humidity conditions away from temperature extremes. Periodically inspect the blade under good light for early oxidation and address spots immediately before they progress. For T10 hamon pieces, ensure the oil covers the hamon boundary zone thoroughly. For gold or color-treated pieces, use only soft cloth - never abrasive materials. Regular simple maintenance keeps real metal carbon steel in excellent condition indefinitely.
