How should battle-ready Chinese swords be stored and maintained?
Updated Feb 2026
Battle-ready Chinese swords require regular maintenance to protect the high-carbon steel blade and maintain the fitting integrity appropriate to their construction standard. The blade maintenance routine is identical to Japanese sword care: after every handling session, wipe the complete blade with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture, then apply a thin protective coat of camellia oil or mineral oil and buff away excess. This routine should be performed after every use and at least monthly during storage periods. For the fitting assembly, inspect the handle retention system periodically - full-tang construction is secure, but the pin or pommel that secures the handle over the tang should be checked for loosening. Scabbard care involves protecting the wood and lacquer or leather covering from moisture extremes and impact contact. Store in a stable-temperature room with moderate humidity - avoid unheated outdoor storage areas, basements with moisture problems, or other environments with temperature or humidity extremes. A horizontally stored sword in its scabbard on a display rack or in a padded case maintains the blade and fitting condition well for extended periods between use.
