How large is a wakizashi katana compared to a standard katana sword?
Updated Feb 2026
A wakizashi katana is meaningfully smaller than a full-length katana, and this size difference affects both the practical logistics of display and the visual dynamics of the piece itself. A standard katana typically measures between 38 and 42 inches in total length with a blade running 27 to 30 inches. A wakizashi sits at roughly two-thirds of those dimensions: overall length typically between 24 and 30 inches, with a blade measuring between 12 and 24 inches. This means a wakizashi occupies considerably less horizontal space on a wall rack and can sit on a tabletop display stand without difficulty. The proportionally smaller fittings - tsuba guard, handle wrapping, and scabbard - are often finished with as much or more detail as their larger katana counterparts, and many collectors find that the wakizashi rewards close-up inspection in ways that a wall-mounted full-length katana does not. For a display that showcases both scales, pairing the two creates an immediate and visually educational contrast.
