A wooden bokken is the traditional choice for building strength and developing slow, controlled technique — the heavier weight of hardwood forces students to engage their muscles more actively and rewards deliberate, precise movement. A metal training katana, by contrast, has a blade profile and weight distribution that more closely mimics the feel of a live-steel sword, which makes it a better tool for developing the cutting angles, drawing mechanics, and speed-work that will transfer directly to steel blade practice. Many experienced practitioners use both: a bokken for conditioning and deliberate slow practice, and a metal training katana for speed drills, full-tempo kata, and technique visualization.
