Is real forged steel harder to maintain than stainless steel?

 Updated Feb 2026

Real forged carbon steel requires a simple maintenance routine that stainless steel does not, but it is not difficult. The primary concern is preventing surface oxidation (rust), which carbon steel is susceptible to in humid environments. Apply a thin coat of choji oil to the blade every two to three months, or more frequently in humid climates. Avoid touching the blade with bare fingers, as skin oils and salts accelerate oxidation. Store the blade in its saya in a dry location. If minor surface spots appear, they can be removed with a gentle application of uchiko powder followed by re-oiling. This routine takes just a few minutes and keeps the blade in excellent condition for decades. The trade-off for this minimal maintenance is a blade with superior hardness, edge quality, and heat-treatment characteristics that stainless steel cannot match.
