What qualifies a katana as an authentic Japanese katana?

An authentic Japanese katana is defined by its construction method, materials, and adherence to traditional proportions. The blade must be forged from carbon steel (not stainless or cast), feature full-tang construction where the steel extends through the handle as a continuous piece, and have a curved single-edged profile in the standard nagasa range of 60 to 80 cm. Authentic fittings include a handle core wrapped with samegawa (ray skin) beneath cord wrapping, a metal tsuba guard, a habaki blade collar, and a fitted hardwood saya. The highest mark of authenticity is a genuine hamon temper line produced through differential clay tempering. Our collection meets all of these criteria across every steel type and price tier.
