How should I display a Japanese sword replica at home?
Updated Feb 2026
The traditional display method is a horizontal sword stand called a katana-kake. Place the sword with the cutting edge facing upward and the handle to the left, which follows the convention for a sword at rest (edge down with handle to the right indicates readiness for drawing). Single-tier stands hold one sword, while multi-tier versions accommodate a daisho set or a full katana, wakizashi, and tanto trio. Position the stand away from direct sunlight to protect the lacquer finish and prevent blade discoloration. Wall-mounted racks are another option for collectors with limited shelf space. For long-term care, oil the blade with choji oil every few months and dust the saya with a soft cloth to maintain the lacquer finish.
