What is a hamidashi tanto and how is it different from a standard tanto?
Updated Feb 2026
A hamidashi tanto is a short Japanese sword in the tanto length range that features a small, projecting tsuba - the guard - rather than no guard or a full-sized circular guard. The name hamidashi refers to the way the guard projects slightly beyond the blade edge on one side, creating an asymmetric profile that is visually distinctive from both the guardless shirasaya tanto and the standard tanto with its full circular or square tsuba. Historically, the hamidashi design was associated with compact utility blades carried as secondary weapons where the partial guard provided basic hand protection without adding the bulk of a full tsuba. The asymmetric guard catches the eye and gives the hamidashi a more dynamic silhouette than a guardless blade, making it a particularly attractive display piece among tanto collectors. In the collection, hamidashi tanto appear in T10 carbon steel with real hamon and in manganese steel with colored blade finishes, each providing a different character within the same basic guard geometry.
