A standard Japanese katana blade measures between 60 and 80 centimeters (approximately 23.5 to 31.5 inches) from the habaki (blade collar) to the tip. Most katana in our collection fall in the 68 to 74 cm range, which is the most common historical length. The overall length including the handle is typically 100 to 110 cm. Blades shorter than 60 cm are classified as wakizashi rather than katana under traditional Japanese categorization, while blades exceeding 80 cm enter odachi or nodachi territory. The standard katana length was historically calibrated for a two-handed grip with enough reach for effective standing combat while remaining light enough for quick draw-and-cut techniques.
