What blade length should I expect from a katana sword?
Updated Feb 2026
A standard katana sword has a blade length (nagasa) between 60 and 80 centimeters, with most pieces in our collection falling in the 68 to 74 cm range. The overall length including the handle (tsuka) typically reaches 100 to 110 cm. This length was historically optimized for a two-handed grip and a reach advantage in standing combat. Blade curvature varies from subtle to pronounced depending on the specific design, with deeper curvature generally favoring draw-cutting techniques and shallower curvature favoring thrusting. If you need a shorter blade for a compact display space, consider a wakizashi (30 to 60 cm blade) as an alternative that carries the same design language in a smaller format.
