How do I identify a high-quality hand-forged katana sword?

 Updated Feb 2026

Several features distinguish a quality hand-forged katana from mass-produced alternatives. First, look for a genuine hamon temper line — on a traditionally forged blade, the hamon has organic irregularity and depth, while etched or printed hamon lines appear flat and uniform. Second, check for full-tang construction by examining the handle assembly; on a full-tang katana, the blade steel extends through the entire handle and is secured with a bamboo pin (mekugi). Third, assess the fittings: quality pieces use real ray skin (samegawa) rather than synthetic alternatives, tightly wound silk or cotton cord (ito), and cast metal tsuba with defined detail. Finally, the blade geometry should show clean, consistent lines from spine to edge, with no visible grinding marks or uneven surfaces.
