How should I maintain and store a Zoro triple katana display?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel blades require periodic light oiling — a thin coat of choji oil or mineral oil applied with a soft cloth every few months prevents surface oxidation, especially in humid environments. Keep the blades inside their saya when not being handled to limit air exposure. Avoid direct sunlight on the lacquered saya, as prolonged UV exposure can fade the finish — this is particularly relevant for the red Sandai Kitetsu and white Wado Ichimonji scabbards, where color fidelity is part of the display appeal. When mounting horizontally on a wall rack, position blades edge-up following traditional Japanese storage convention, which also reduces pressure on the habaki (blade collar) over time.
