How can I tell if a Damascus tanto sword has a genuine folded pattern?

 Updated Feb 2026

A genuine Damascus pattern is created during the forging process and is integral to the steel structure, while imitation patterns are etched or laser-engraved onto the surface of a single-steel blade. There are a few ways to identify the real thing. On a genuine folded blade, the pattern continues seamlessly from the flat of the blade onto the spine and into the tang area — an etched pattern typically stops at the visible surfaces. The lines in genuine Damascus have subtle irregularities and organic variation, while machine-applied patterns tend to be more uniform and repetitive. Under close inspection, genuine layering shows depth in the steel when viewed at different angles, whereas surface etching appears flat. All Damascus tanto swords in our collection use genuine folded steel construction.
