What are the practical differences between manganese and T10 or 1095 wakizashi?
Updated Feb 2026
The differences appear in three areas. Edge retention: T10 and 1095 hold a refined edge longer due to higher hardness, meaning they stay sharper through more cutting if used functionally. Hamon capability: T10 responds beautifully to clay tempering producing visible hamon lines, while manganese steel typically does not produce clear hamon. Surface quality: premium steels polish to more reflective, visually appealing surfaces. For display-only collectors, the hamon and surface differences are most relevant. For collectors who occasionally test cutting, the edge retention matters more. For collectors focused primarily on overall visual presentation at normal display distance, the differences are modest.
