How should I store and maintain a brown handle aikuchi long-term?
Updated Mar 2026
Proper storage for a brown handle aikuchi involves caring for two distinct material categories: the blade and the organic components (wood handle and saya). For the blade, apply a very light coat of choji oil or neutral mineral oil every few months, using a soft lint-free cloth. This prevents oxidation without damaging the steel's surface finish. For the rosewood or dark wood handle and saya, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade and dry the wood, and keep the piece in a stable environment away from humidity swings — ideally between 45–60% relative humidity. Do not store the blade inserted in the saya for extended periods without occasional removal and inspection, as trapped moisture can damage both surfaces.
