How should I store a teal ito katana to prevent cord fading?
Updated Mar 2026
Teal ito, typically made from synthetic silk, cotton, or genuine silk depending on construction grade, is vulnerable to prolonged UV exposure which causes gradual color bleaching. Store your collectible katana horizontally on a display stand away from direct sunlight or strong artificial UV sources. For long-term storage, a sword bag (katana bukuro) in a cool, dry environment is ideal. The blade itself should be lightly coated with neutral choji oil every few months to prevent oxidation - use a soft cloth and apply sparingly. Avoid storing in high-humidity environments, as moisture accelerates both cord fiber degradation and carbon steel patination. If dust accumulates on the ito, a soft dry brush is preferred over damp cleaning, which can cause dye migration on tightly wrapped cord.
