How should I display and maintain a white lacquer saya?
Updated Mar 2026
White lacquer saya require a bit more attention than darker finishes because scuffs and dust show more readily against the light surface. Wipe the saya regularly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth — avoid any liquid cleaners unless specifically formulated for lacquered wood. Store the sword horizontally on a proper katana stand, edge upward in the traditional Japanese display orientation, and keep it away from direct sunlight, which can yellow or fade lacquer finishes over extended exposure. The carbon steel blade itself should receive a light coat of camellia or mineral sword oil every few months to prevent oxidation, especially in coastal or high-humidity environments. With this simple routine, both the saya and blade will remain display-ready for years.
