Does 1095 steel rust, and how should I protect the blade?

 Updated Mar 2026

Yes - 1095 is a non-stainless carbon steel and will oxidize without basic maintenance. The practical routine is simple: apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade surface every two to three months, and always after handling, since skin oils accelerate oxidation. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to spread the oil evenly, then wipe off any excess. Store the tanto in its saya, in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity. A dedicated sword bag or paulownia wood box adds an extra layer of protection. With this routine, the blade will retain its finish and character for many years of display.
