How should I care for a white saya to keep it looking clean?

 Updated Mar 2026

White sayas are lacquered wood, and they require a bit more mindful handling than darker finishes simply because surface marks show more readily. For routine care, wipe the saya with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and fingerprint oils - avoid any solvent-based cleaners, which can dull or cloud the lacquer surface over time. Store the piece away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure will gradually yellow white lacquer finishes regardless of quality. If you live in a high-humidity environment, storing the sword in a display case with silica gel packets nearby will help prevent the wood beneath the lacquer from swelling or warping. For the blade itself, a light application of choji oil every few months is the standard preservation method for carbon steel - apply with a soft cloth and wipe to a thin, even coat.
