What's the best way to store and maintain these display pieces?
Updated Mar 2026
For long-term display, store these replicas horizontally on a dedicated katana stand to prevent stress on the saya or handle joints. Apply a light coat of choji oil or camellia oil to the blade every few months to protect the 1045 carbon steel from surface oxidation, especially in humid environments. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the purple lacquer on the saya to fade or yellow over time. When handling, use a soft cloth or cotton gloves to prevent fingerprint oils from settling on the polished blade surface. Never store the blade inside the saya for extended periods without periodic airing, as trapped moisture can accelerate oxidation at the habaki.
