What should I know about displaying carbon steel collectibles at home?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon steel requires more mindful storage than stainless alternatives. The primary concern is moisture - even brief exposure to humidity can initiate surface oxidation, which appears first as light rust spots on unprotected areas of the blade. A thin coat of choji oil or a high-quality mineral oil applied with a soft cloth every few months creates a protective barrier that slows oxidation significantly. When displaying the sword, avoid placing it near windows where sunlight and temperature fluctuations accelerate finish degradation on both the blade and the saya. Horizontal display on a dedicated stand reduces stress on the mounting hardware and keeps the blade edge from contacting hard surfaces. For long-term storage, a paulownia wood box is the traditional choice - the wood naturally regulates humidity and is gentle on lacquered saya finishes.
