How should I care for and store a carbon steel display sword?

 Updated Mar 2026

Carbon steel requires more attentive care than stainless steel because it is susceptible to oxidation. For long-term display, apply a thin layer of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every few months using a soft cloth, working from the base toward the tip. Store the sword in a low-humidity environment and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade the lacquered saya over time. If the blade is kept inside its scabbard for extended periods, ensure the saya interior is dry before sheathing. Wooden sword stands are ideal for horizontal display and allow for proper air circulation. Wiping the blade with a clean cloth after handling removes fingerprint oils that can cause spotting.
