How should I store a red anime katana to protect the finish?
Updated Feb 2026
Proper storage protects both the blade steel and the lacquered or etched color finish. Store the katana horizontally on a display stand or in its saya, edge facing upward in the traditional Japanese manner - this prevents the blade from resting on the lacquered interior of the saya, which can eventually transfer oils or cause micro-abrasions. Avoid display locations with direct sunlight, which can fade red lacquer over time, and keep the piece away from high-humidity environments that accelerate surface oxidation on carbon steel. Apply a thin coat of blade oil (choji or mineral-based) to the steel every one to three months depending on your climate. Never store the blade wrapped in material that traps moisture against the surface.
