How should I store and maintain a clay-tempered collectible katana?
Updated Mar 2026
Clay-tempered high-carbon blades require consistent care to prevent oxidation and preserve the surface finish. After handling, always wipe the blade with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprint oils, which are surprisingly corrosive over time. Apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or a quality mineral oil along the entire blade surface every one to three months depending on your local humidity. Store the sword horizontally in its saya (scabbard) with the edge facing upward in the traditional Japanese manner, which also helps preserve the saya's inner lining. Avoid environments with high humidity fluctuations - a stable room between 40-55% relative humidity is ideal. Never store a blade in a leather-wrapped case for extended periods, as leather retains moisture.
